Charitable dollars grew about 5.0% in 2025, but the number of donors fell 3.6%, continuing a slide that started in 2021, according to the AFP Fundraising Effectiveness Project. Program participation and program costs, meanwhile, hit record highs in Sage's 2025 Nonprofit Technology Impact Report, and 58% of nonprofits now rank hiring and retention as their single biggest external challenge, outranking funding competition and economic uncertainty.

That is the squeeze: more programs, higher unit costs, fewer donors, and no one left to hire. Nonprofit process automation with Microsoft is no longer a technology conversation. It is the only realistic way to convert administrative hours back into program hours.
